The North Tech 4" chainsaw unbox and first run
This is a unboxing and first run video of the North Tech 18 volt four inch pruning chainsaw. This was purchased at Menards commercial website for my own use and review. I describe the saw and assemble it. I then perform a first run test on two different size tree limbs. First impressions are that it is a good performer at a reasonable price point ($20.00) which includes a two chains and two batteries. Look for future updates when I review the long term performance of this saw.

First start with the Ryobi 16 chainsaw
I did just as you showed in the video, and the chain saw worked fine for a bit, but then the chain quit moving so I turned it off, noticed the chain had no oil on it and could see the chain showed heat marks on the chain. Checked the oil and it was still full. So now I have to check the chain off and see if the oiler is plugged or why it is not oiling the chain. This is right out of the box but must have been sitting for awhile as I noticed on the front of the motor, a small metal cover with rivets had small rust on them so I am wondering if Home depot sent me one that had been sitting for some time. Pissed yes, but I may find out what is going on. Not my first rodeo with a chain saw. Thanks good to know that it is an auto oiler as I was looking for a push button to keep it oiled.
I ordered two of these and I got one at the store. Great portable hand chainsaw for all kinds of wood cutting. I spray the chain with oil every once in a while. I also got the drill, impact gun, leaf blower and work light. So now I have plenty of batteries and chargers.
Great saw
I understand your being curious. I do the same thing with the chainsaws I have come to own. I find the hobby very interesting.
Thank you. Instructions for putting together were not very clear. You were a big help.
Ryobi own hypertough and black max? All 3 saws are identical just different colors and stickers
19.10.23 Thanks for your great review after owning it for two years. I have just recently purchased one for myself and am finding it to be a great little chainsaw, love it. Thanks again
my light won’t turn on for the election beam
I dont have a lot of experience with 2 stroke engines but what I do know is my 37cc ryobi saw starts almost instantly, I have a cheap hypertough gas string trimmer that starts almost as fast and in last place I got a Bolens trimmer on clearance at my work (Lowes) and it's a real bitch to start.. you have to crank it a few times on setting one, then squeeze handle and pull the rope 5-10x on setting 2 until it pops off and once it does you select setting 3 and good to go. My cheap hypertough says pull out the choke. Once it sputters push choke in and its ready.. i dont know if the walmart trimmer has a centrifugal clutch or what but the Bolen is a direct drive so each pull of the cord spins the blade.. i cant bitch because as a Lowes employee i got it for $12 since it was clearanced for $47 + 75% off.. it runs well once it's started and warmed up but I can see why it didn't sell well and probably got a lot of returns from users. Gotta give props to that Wally world hypertough cuz she starts easy and will eat the shit you throw at her, i designated that with a brush cutter blade because I dont mind if it fails me but she's a banger .. Anyways i inow this is a ryobi review BUT I'm saying if your choice is a gas hypertough tool i wouldn't be worried. The price is right and ive pushed mine beyond what they're supposed to do and she keeps on running
The ryobi , black&decker, homelite and Walmart black max saws are the same. But Walmart regularly have big sales. Can get the black max 16 & 18" 38cc $60-$80, 20" 50cc $75 to $130 when on sales, plus 3yr warranty included. I got 20" 50cc on super sale for only $75 .
That's a really good deal, like any engine keep fuel in em and keep em lubed and they'll do the job.. only thing I did was changed put the chain. With and "saw" they always say doesn't matter if it's a cheap or expensive saw ALWAYS put a good blade/chain on it and it'll make all the difference. I use Diablo brand for my circular/recip saws etc.. gotta Oregon brand chain for my Ryobi and shes happy
I enjoyed the video! I have two 2250s that I've had a couple of years now. Really good units. I saw where the 3800 was on sale around Thanksgiving for $529 on the wen website. Was very tempting 🤔
Excellent content! You definitely need to research "Promosm"!!
I have used this Ryobi 16" 37cc saw for my limbing and small cuts (super lightweight, and a good inexpensive little saw for little projects) for over 5 years. Of course, I upgraded this Ryobi to an Oregon bar and chain to make it work well. But I digress. I never expected that this saw would become a staple on my dads property. I did not expect that it would be a little workhorse that would show up every day to limb, chop, and make short work of new growth. I am on my 3rd chain, and (as I explained, go OREGON bars!) my 2nd bar. Learn how to keep your chain sharp, so you are not buying a new chain when what you have just needs a little honing (imagine everyone throwing away their pocket knives, instead of sharpening them correctly). Whatever saw you choose to take home, just remember the mantra of wise men everywhere. 'She is a fickle bitch. You have to learn just what she wants. Just what she needs, even if she will never articulate that fact to you. Use your Zen power, and figure out what she needs to be happy and grind hard. She will never tell you, so you had better figure that out for yourself. If you can unlock that mystery, she will stay by your side forever, and never let you down'.
Thanks for this - helpful. Just picked up the 14" bar version today having only used other peoples' saws before. Was having a bit of a time figuring out the choke as other videos will recommend you run at half instead of no choke. Great demo and helpful to see it done in its entirety.
I just bought a new RY3716. Question. Outside of sharpening the chain, you mention nothing about any maintenance program, internal cleaning, etc. I have now two Ryobi chainsaws and both are used daily for my firewood business. Yes I push them both hard. They both get thorough inside/outside maintenance after every use. Zero complaints.
I have been struggling lol....
Anyone who uses a chainsaw frequently doesn’t start it like this. Start it with some cojones. Send it
There decent with a bit of fiddling, fine out of the box for anything home related but I got me in a pinch bucking 20 plus trees and it didn't last long. With some exhaust mods and a rag instead of that foam filter it wakes up a lot and cuts good until the oiler starts clogging.

Nothing more satisfying then cutting down nature.
I'm back reviewing a bunch of saw videos. Our dock building business bought two of the 14's and the 16's. We popped the engines open to find that they are Honda engines! This Ryobi is actually a patent buyover from The Walmart : Blackmax Both saws run a Honda engine with the same chain, so yes, you can walk right into Walmart and grab that Tri-Link 2-chain pack and throw them right on here visa-versa. That's a job site package all in all, quick! No waiting on you or a dealer to fix stuff! Experience wise: clean the wood. These chains suck if you hit a nail. They are toast in half a second of hitting any nail. Just put the saw down and re-sharpen it for 5 minutes but trust us, it's dull if you had the accident. When it came to trees instead of dock cribs, I had no problem felling a 12", never bogged down on torque. Be religious in fuel ratio because this carb will gunk If you aren't paying attention after two tanks. Overall: a workhorse that cuts 2 seconds slower on average but runs a 3/8 chain/a saw that comes with a box, and a supportive warranty backed by the non-credible HD walk-in-walk out process: yeah this is a steal if you are a handyman. Tru-Green uses these for cutting sod btw.
*Coming up on having had this saw for a year....am a casual user and bought it to cut up sections for bowl blanks. Easy to start, **Bestfor.Garden** also recommend even after storage for a couple of months. Simple chain tension adjustment. Just cut up some 20" Osage Orange, including ripping bolts in half (at an angle). Like butter!*
Nice
What if I use 40:1 mix. Will that cause any harm to my chainsaw?
Thank you for the long term review. I have been looking for a reliable cheapo for occasional household use and can’t justify a high end one unless that was my only option. I also like the case option. I will buy one tomorrow. Seems like it is still a great value given how it has performed for you. I imagine my use would be the same. Do you use the canned pre mix 50:1 or do something different? I assume the bar oil eventually leaks out, do you do anything special when you put it away for a while, like drain the fluids? Thanks again.
Patrick, I have been satisfied with this saw for its intended purpose. The case is handy for storage and keeps stuff in one place so I am not looking all over. I mix my gas and oil. I put a couple paper towels in the bottom of the case to catch what little oil seeps after use.
Alot of people hate this brand. I have had my fair share of problems with their battery tools. I am done with that platform from this brand. But i have had zero issues with their gas stuff. I have this exact saw. I put an 18 inch bar and chain on it. Didn't need to just wanted to. I will say that it works great as a 16 or 18. Considering the 18 sold in stores is same cc's as the 16. The chain that came on the tool is horrendous and should be changed immediately. It only has a cutting tooth every 6 inches or so. Most chains have a tooth every 3 or 4 inches. But other than that i have had zero issues. I have owned it for 3 or 4 years and have cut about 4 cords of firewood and probably another 25-50 hours of storm clean up and pruning and such. So not a pro saw by any means but certainly reliable for a suburban homeowner with a fireplace that they use every other night in the winter. The only thing i do to all of my gas tools is to winterize them every year. I drain all but a half cup of gas out of the tank and add a 1/4 cup of seafoam. Let them run dry with this mixture in it and store away for winter. Fill up with gas in the spring and press the primer bulb several times and boom they start up again in 4 or five pulls
You can start that thing in flip flops and it wouldn't bother me one bit
*This is my third small chainsaw.💫 **allabout.wiki/Chainsaw-01** The first was corded, and second not but both had the unwelcome feature of needing to hand prime the oil for the chain with no clear idea of how much oil was left in the chamber. They also made tension maintenance clumsy as I needed a tool in each hand to do it properly. Now, here comes a chainsaw with a simple turn of the external tension control to maintain proper cutting tension and a bar oil reservoir that is visible with clear markings. Sign. Did I mention that the oil is automatically released to the chain? Did my first cuts yesterday which went smoothly, so much so that a friend who'd been intimidated by these machines came by, tried to use it and was so happy she's buying one for herself. The price is excellent and after reading the reviews I bought this one even though I loathe orange on tools. The attractive black and green one cost almost twice a*
I will never buy another Ryobi tool again!
Just curious why? Is it because of this saw?
@@hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987 Yes I am tired of working on it.
@@55chevytruck thanks I will probably just return mine while I still can

Can I change the blade length to 48inches? I got some thick logs to process.
This saw doesn't have the power for it. This motor only supports the 14 and 16 inch bar.
I always liked the old house with the huge clock in the front on the old highway on the way to Topeka from Lawrence.
This is such a beautiful building, built by Security Benefit Association in the early 20th century. It was acquired in the 1980s by the Menninger Psychiatric Clinic and hospital which couldn't afford the upkeep of all the historic buildings there. It will take a huge amount of money to restore and modernize this building and so it sits empty while decisions on the cost effectiveness are made.

how loose should the chair be on replacement
Did you just post a photo of this on Reddit? Haha nice shots.
Where are his chaps and the chain brake is supposed to be on
I have this exact chainsaw. We burn firewood for heat during the winter. It is a great saw. Light weight. Never not 1 problem with mine. It cuts line a champ and starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull cold every time.
I have a similar bradford pear...but I've also done a little Ryobi work - ua-cam.com/video/kOukBCUuwNU/v-deo.html
So it’s been 2 years. How’s the saw holding up now?
Hey, thanks for asking. Here is the link to my long term review from last summer. ua-cam.com/video/y9icFN_ETYo/v-deo.html Still running great although this spring I bought a new Oregon bar and chain.
Thanks! I have been having trouble starting mine. Hope this helps.
Safety first...put on gloves that will not allow chainsaw penetration. <Says guy with $1.34 /pr Harbor Freight gloves>
Ryobi saws are junk.
Treat it right. Do your part and it is a beast. I cannot speak to the misfortune of others. I will just state facts. I learned the saw thoroughly. I use it hard daily felling trees, bucking into manageable logs for transport out of the woods and then cut each between 10"-12" long because that is the size range my customers ask for. Split them with a double bit and on the rack they go. The 3714 has yet to show any signs of failure whatsoever and I do push it hard sometimes. I love mine.
I bought 2 ryboi chain saws new. They're junk. I will never buy another one.
Where's the videos?
@@utseay No video. They're just junk. Don't buy ryobi
Ron Mills got one for a present. Plan on cutting 40-60 limbs like a boss. Too junk for that?
@@utseay yes it will work for that. I burn wood for the winter. Ryobi just don't hold up. Good luck with you new saw.
And why is that? You can't throw out a comment like that, without explaining what your issue is.
Ok, we do not want to see the box or attachments make it work. ( 1 gallon of gasoline + Ethanol) add Oil for the Chainsaw - car oil will not work, carefully read the manual.
cool
chain is loose
You did not actually have the chain brake off when you started it, so the start was not correct. You really gotta push it towards the handle. If you see the orange thing on the right side of the chain brake it means the chain brake is on. Great video otherwise, I just think it is important to note...
